How Google decides who makes the map pack

Local Titan · Updated · 5-minute read

Google fills the map pack with the businesses it judges most relevant to the search, closest to the searcher and most prominent (well known, with reviews and links from other sites). You cannot pay for an organic spot; ads in or above the pack are labeled Sponsored.

In short

  • Google weighs relevance, distance and prominence together, so the closest business does not always win.
  • Your primary category, listed services and website text drive relevance.
  • Distance is measured from each searcher, so your rank changes from street to street.
  • Steady genuine reviews and real local links build prominence.
  • Fake reviews and keyword-stuffed names can get your profile restricted or suspended; fake reviews also risk FTC civil penalties.

Relevance: does your profile match the search?

Relevance is how well your Business Profile matches the words someone searched. Google says the categories you select affect your local ranking, so they are the first thing to fix.

One caution: editing a category can trigger a new verification, so change categories on purpose, not on a whim.

Distance: your rank changes with the searcher

Distance is how far your business is from the person searching. If they do not share a location, Google uses what it knows about where they are. So you have no single rank, only a rank for each searcher in each spot.

A rank check from your own office tells you little. Check the same search from many points across your service area (often called a grid scan) and you see the real picture: strong near your base, weaker farther out.

If you travel to customers, hide your address and set a service area: up to 20 cities or ZIP codes, within about 2 hours' drive of your base. You can no longer draw a radius. In our experience a bigger service area does not make you rank across all of it.

Prominence: how well known Google thinks you are

Prominence is how well known Google thinks your business is. (The top of Google's help page now calls this factor popularity; the section itself still says prominence.) Its ranking help page names links from other websites and the number of reviews, and says more reviews and positive ratings can help.

In 2025 Google rewrote that help page and dropped the line that your position in regular web results is a local ranking factor. A strong website still helps relevance and earns links, but Google no longer states the direct link.

What you cannot buy

Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Paid placements are separate: Local Ads can appear above or inside local results, and Local Services Ads charge per lead. Both are labeled Sponsored and do not move your organic position.

Since October 2025, Local Services advertisers that pass screening get a single Google Verified badge. It replaced the Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges, and Google retired its money-back guarantee.

Shortcuts that backfire

Replying to reviews is worth doing for the customers who read them. Google's tips say helpful replies help your business stand out, but Google does not call replies a ranking factor.

Where to start

  1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile.
  2. Set the most specific primary category, your services, hours and service area.
  3. Build review requests into every completed job.
  4. Make your name, address and phone match on your website and main directories.
  5. Write one plain page per main service.
  6. Earn a few real local links.
  7. Measure rank across your service area, not from one point, and recheck every quarter.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I rank first at my office but not across town?

Because distance is measured from each searcher. From your office you are the closest match; across town, closer businesses with similar relevance and prominence win. Check your rank from many points across your service area before you judge it.

Does spending on Local Services Ads help my map pack ranking?

No. Google states there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Ads can sit above or inside local results with a Sponsored label, but your organic position still depends on relevance, distance and prominence.

Can I rank in a town where I have no office?

A service business can list that town as one of up to 20 service areas, but you will usually rank best near your base. Google does not allow a virtual office or mailbox address to create a local presence there.

How long does it take to get into the map pack?

Google publishes no timeline. Profile fixes such as categories and services show after Google reviews the edit, while reviews and links build over months. In busy trades, prominence usually takes the longest.

Do AI answers in Google Maps pick businesses the same way?

Google has not published how its Ask Maps feature (launched in the US and India in March 2026) chooses places. It draws on Maps data, including reviews, so an accurate profile and steady reviews help there too. See our AI SEO guide.
